Toxic iPhone

Apple faces legal actions over the recent threat by environmental group Greenpeace when it discovered it the new apple iPhone contains toxic plastics. Although the phone complies with all legal material specifications the group is claiming that the latest in technological gadgetry from apple could potentially be deadly and should therefore be recalled. Greenpeace are a serious group with plenty of financial backing but this seems absurd to take on a company such as apple which technically is conforming to all relevant regulations.
David Santillo, of the Greenpeace group has said in a video that was posted on the campaign group’s website: “Electronics companies have traditionally relied on the cool, clean image of their devices in order to sell them. What we have found over the years is that once you get behind that shiny cover, the story is very different.”
The level of phthalate esters, the chemical linked to birth defects, in plastic coating of iPhone headphone wires is greater than that allowed in toys or childcare items sold in Europe. CEH’s website said that the group “works to hold corporations accountable for their use of toxic chemicals that endanger public health”.
This argument will undoubtedly rage on for a few weeks or months but it has already put a downer on the European release on the iPod, however it ahs not stopped over 9 million selling in 12 hours. The overall cost of the product will be ₤900, ₤269 for the phone itself plus a 18 month contract. Apple and the industry itself are confident that the case against them will not be taken any further than press releases by the group but says “we do all we can to make our products as safe as possible whilst still providing technology that people want or need. We spend millions each year on researching health and safety f our products. Steve Jobs does promise “a greener Apple”
